Remus must be quite an intuitive person -- not so much in a supernatural way, but he must be so used to anticipating and accepting rejections and disappointments that he can just kind of smell when they're coming. And responds to them ahead of time. Maybe he, more than anyone, blames himself for not seeing (so he thinks) this coming.
