Okay. So. Some of you may have seen this already, or not: BBC Announces New Who Companion for Season Five.
MAJOR SPOILERS AT THAT LINK. Please don't click if you don't want to know.
I'm not really going to comment on Karen Gillian, except to say that she has a lovely, interesting face, she sounds really enthusiastic about the part and her new co-star, and I'm sure she'll do a great job in the role. All news of the new season makes me generally excited, because despite my Moffat-based reservations, I'm going to be watching next year.
Part of me wishes we could see a different model for the companion/Doctor relationship besides the young woman/young man setup: a parent and child, an older woman or man, a couple, another alien, whatever. I think it would add a lot of dimension to the show to see a new Doctor experience the world with a new structure in the TARDIS. But. I'll take what I can get and not judge too much before we see it unfold.
That said-
-moving on to Moffat. Here's the quote that made my best friend call me this morning, shouting angry threats to the universe in general:
"We saw some amazing actresses for this part, but when Karen came through the door the game was up. Funny, and clever, and gorgeous, and sexy. Or Scottish, which is the quick way of saying it. A generation of little girls will want to be her. And a generation of little boys will want them to be her too."
Oh, bravo, Moffat. God knows that enforcing the patriarchal beauty standard is the best thing you could hope to accomplish on a long-running science fiction epic.
Seriously ?
