You might as well ask me if I like stories. (UM, A LITTLE.) If I like myth, if I like ideas, if I like to sit around with my friends and ask 'what if' and wonder how things might have gone differently. Do I like the idea that stories and characters have meanings, have long lives, outside of their first telling? (Hello Alice, hello Wendy and Peter; hello Anansi, Loki and Coyote, Hercules; hello Dracula and Juliet and Holmes and Robin Hood and Superman. And so on.) Do I like to watch people take an idea and roll around inside it for a while and find something new to say, some new way to say it? Sometimes, do I just like to laugh, or say 'ooh- never thought of that!'?
Basically, I think it's the human condition. And humanity I love, am in love with, even though we are often flawed and cruel and even when we type in that horrifying alternating capslock and lowercase that I won't replicate here. Fanfiction is not a new invention brought about by some imaginary death of originality. Fanfiction is us doing what we have always done, which is tell and re-tell and re-think and re-build worlds and stories we know and love. It can be a sprawling, flawless epic or it can be 500 words of badly written self-insert pron; overall, it has meaning.
That was probably ten pounds of tl;dr in a two-pound bag, but whatevs. I bet you wish I'd written 800 awful words of porn instead of this. Anyway. I am graduating this week and I am ridiculously emotional and keep scrubbing the floors (literally) to work off the crazy energy. I love you guys. I love fandom! I am not embarrassed to sob on your shoulder and sing sad drinking songs about my overwhelming love for everyone right now.
