In the days following The End of Time, I've been struck with a curious thought that just won't leave me alone...
First, I will say that this isn't a complaint. I enjoyed both episodes, reveled in the Master, wept for the Doctor, cheered for Wilf, and... cried like a baby at the former companion bits. YOU DID TOO, SHH. I'm not angry and I'm not really sad, except in the sense that I have watched an era (a much-beloved era) come to an end.
That said, there's something that I just can't help turning over and over in my head a bit. In the episodes, we have the Master, using a giant "sickbed" device designed to heal/regenerate/rejuvenate the populations of entire planets. He imprints it with his own time lord DNA and lets it loose on the earth, transforming humans into a planet of time lords.
So.
In this particular arrangement, don't we have an almost perfect setup for the healing/reawakening of the DoctorDonna ? Or Donna Noble, Witty Defender of Worlds. This must be an idea someone else has had at some point (have they ? I'd love a link to any similar discussions.) I imagine it could work, with a minimum of handwaving, considering the device is meant to heal and it could activate the time lord DNA, can't you picture the Doctor grabbing his own hair and going "IT JUST SHOULDN'T BE POSSIBLE" but then, it just could be. Everything could happen the same up to the point where Donna is cornered in the alleyway by the crowd of Masters. At that point, she could be overwhelmed by memories and the defensive burst of light could knock out all the Masters- but not her. Instead she seems to have regained control of herself and has a new confidence- she remembers everything!
At that point, there's any number of ways it could have played out- just scenes of Donna helping out her panicking neighbors, DoctorDonna trying to patch into some kind of signal feed to find out what's happening, whatever. Or go the more elaborate route- the TARDIS finds her or she finds the TARDIS and they zoom into action. The missle scene could become a more dangerous crash-landing where DoctorDonna arrives in the nick of time to wisk them into the TARDIS. The final sacrifice of the Doctor for Wilf could be turned into a heart-wrenching triangle. Who knows! There are probably a hundred different ways it could play out, with Donna being restored to herself or taking on the DoctorDonna permanently. As far as the ending goes, it would be fitting to see her remain on earth to fight the good fight and travel the world with her fiance and family.
Well. It could have gone differently, and it didn't. I love Donna and I find hope and happiness in the idea that with a secure future she can travel the world and change it for the better. Still- I feel a little sadness that out of all of them, out of all the companions they showed, she's the only one that won't be left with her good memories of their time shared.
Thank heaven for fanfiction, really, sometimes it's the only way to fly. ;)
