RTD FTW.

The only six letters I need today.

A Rose is a Rose is a Rose.

I love RTD today. (And, er, yesterday, when I watched it the first time.) I love him forever and ever. Regardless of what comes next- which, by the way, I am hopeful and confident for two awesome finalecakes- he's proven himself as one of the best character writers in television.

Rose and Donna were so much themselves, in all the layers and reveals and changes. Donna was always the Donna we know and love, but Catherine Tate (and the good writing) reminded us that she could be a bit oblivious and self-centered back in the day, before her world expanded. But that always, always, her heart was with her family- it was shattering to watch their situation go from bad to worse, while she and Wilf still clung to small happinesses together and always cared for one another. When her eyes started to open up and recognize the horror of their crumbling world, I wanted to cry for her.

And.... Rose, I'm incoherant about Rose. Mostly. RTD hasn't forgotten for a second what she's truly like. Even without the Doctor, she never gave in and never gave up, never just accepted things. She was compassionate to Donna but determined to see the world put back to rights... I'm curious, when she talks about having seen so much, what that literally means- has she been traveling through other worlds ? How many ? For how long ?

Anyway. Rose stroking the TARDIS and hearing it flare to a little bit of life... priceless. "Great hair... really great hair," priceless. "I dunno... it's something the Doctor would say !" Priceless. Donna and Rose geeking out at the TARDIS and time-travel... PRICELESS. That's really something these two share (besides, obviously, a very sharp sense of humor,) that desire to get above and beyond and away, to see the world- worlds- and to know what's out there.

This is bringing me to one of my main points, something I've harped on in the past- that Rose doesn't see the Doctor as the Lonely God, but as himself. Her speech to Donna about how Donna is special and brilliant, and that the Doctor would have shown her that about herself, brought tears to my eyes. Because YES. "That's something he did for me." YES. He didn't "burn" Rose Tyler when she got too close- he showed her the wonders of the world and then he turned the mirror around and told her she was one of them. That's what he does for people- gives them confidence, lets them shine, trusts them to come through and save the day and be brilliant. Fantastic. How many times have we heard him tell Donna "yes, you can !"

For Rose to deliver that speech; missing him, fighting for him, believing in herself and in Donna... gaaaaah. AMAZING.

And after all that:

"Two words." (How amazing were the cuts here ? The episode was very well-edited. Rose mouthing the words as Donna said them- also, how does Rose keep being at the side of people dying in car accidents ? I don't want to laugh, but there it is, ahhh.)

AND THEN:

"What was her name, Donna- what was her name ?" (David Tennant's face broke me.)

And then RUNNING and all the posters are screaming OMGWTFBBQBADWOLF and the CLOISTER BELL IS RINGING, OH MY GOD.

SO EXCITED.

SO VERY, VERY EXCITED.
