Wherefore art thou Piz ?

orange_crushedAhhhh, crack that open... the fresh, sweet scent of Veronica Mars.
The opening credits, which were a little weird in my estimation with their goldybrowniness; also included a touching Veronica/Logan screen that caused me to immediately forget the weird and praise all opening sequence directors. And to swear a lot, expressively and with hand gestures that forced my husband to hurl a pillow at me.
Loved the campus, loved Dick falling apart at the seams, loved Mac's detachment and everyone's poor attempts at coping, loved Mac's roommate, who was exactly the kind of girl I got for my first dorm assignment. Yikes. Likes the mystery and the tie-backs to the mentoring program, etc. etc. Loved Wallace as always. Loved Kendall coming out to her man, and I feel I was probably wearing the same goofy aw you kids expression that Daddy Mars was, if he only briefly, when he seemed to remember that his wife is a whore-thief. Loved Logan's embrace of the prodigal Dick- no, I can't believe I typed that either.
Hated Piz.
I'm sure you expected that. You are, after all, much brighter than the average bulb, dear reader. I'll be honest, I'd hate anyone who came between my Tuesday-night love-fest. But I don't just hate Piz for himself- he's funny and charming and Wallace likes him, and honestly I'd like him. I hate Piz because of what he represented to me, something every woman seems to meet in college at least once:
The Nice Guy(tm). Not a nice guy, the Nice Guy(tm). This is something the blogging crew over at places like Pandagon and Feministe have explored in depth. It's a character that pops up a lot in drama where they need a love triangle- because gosh darnit ! He's just so goddam nice ! I guess his personality means that the girl should fall in love with him, and preferably quickly !
Honestly, I just don't understand where his character is supposed to fit. Are we supposed to boo and hiss at him, as he admires Veronica and makes ick boo kissing faces at her and Logan ? (I shit you not- the kid screwed up his face like brussel sprouts were about to be shoved up his nose- more on that later.) Or, more to the point, I imagine, are we supposed to sympathize with him, and say hey buddy- you're right ! You really should get the girl ! Despite the fact that you don't actually know her at all, and she's shown no interest in you. If the character is meant to be a temptation for Veronica, I've no sympathy. And no interest.
Nice Guys. The male friends who shoot dirty looks at the boyfriends. They're the guys who say desperate, love-me phrases like "Girls never want me- they just want their bad boys." And eventually, if you poke them hard enough, some will say: "I guess girls don't like me because I'm not mean enough to them." And if you date them, they'll say: "Those girls are stupid and slutty because they don't like me- but you, you're not like that !" I'm definitely not talking about actual nice guys- who are many in number and make up the ranks of snuggly darlings for women everywhere.
There's a strange sense of entitlement that I was getting from that earlier scene- the scene where Piz witnesses Veronica kiss Logan in the cafeteria. He actually looks both hurt and disgusted; whereas I was left wondering, huh ? Haven't I seen this before ? Hmmm. In that scene I noted he's actually even wearing what I think is Duncan's sweater. Nice. I was further pleased by Veronica's disgusted look when Piz casually mentioned "her friend that got murdered." It was classic bitch please from our girl. Because she's correct in feeling that Piz doesn't know what he's talking about.
If they drop the I want Jessie's girl theme they spent this episode on, I will be the first to stand up and cheer for Piz. Piz ! He's my kinda guy.
EDIT: Okay, okay. I am being way too hard on this kid. I've known him for all of thirty minutes. I think he has the potential to be a great character..... hmm. Thirty miniutes- thirty minutes that he spent staring longingly at Veronica, when he wasn't staring longingly at other girls. There I go again ! I don't mean to. It's just that.... look, Piz. There's only room for one Dick Casablancas in my life, and it's Dick Casablancas.
Ohh, Dick. In a minute I'll hijack this entry from myself, and write your praises in poetry and prose.
There once was a Dick Casa-blank
whose assets were huge (in the bank)
he wore board shorts and sandals
through all kinds of scandals
but fell from grace this way: he drank.
